A New Westminster City Councillor is getting behind a fundraiser launched to support the grieving families of two workers tragically killed at a lumber yard in January.
Chuck Puchmayr says on top of coping with the unbearable loss of a loved one, the families of two men who were found dead under a load of lumber at the Pacific Reload yard in Queensborough will get minimal compensation from the employer.
“There is a widow’s benefit and then there is a pension that is paid out. The fact that he was only employed for two months it will be the absolute minimum that will be paid out to the family. Also, Worksafe BC and the employer can’t be sued for any type of negligence.”
A “GoFundMe” online crowdfunding campaign has been launched to support the families.
Puchmayr says the company has received WorkSafe orders in the past and a police investigation is still underway.
