A group of Surrey parents are declaring victory after they feared they’d be left scrambling for childcare.
Phil Dutton says he was shocked to learn the before and after school childcare program at the Tonge Louie YMCA in Surrey was going to be shut down in June , leaving 31 families scrambling to make other arrangements in a fast-growing city where childcare waitlists can be years-long.
“Trying to find daycare now is going to be very difficult and potentially people are going to have quit their jobs.”
Hours after CKNW made its initial inquiries, the YMCA did an about face.

Spokesperson Kelly Walker says staff “made some missteps” in this case.
“The YMCA did not adequately consult with the families and we really put them in a difficult position in regards to their child’s care this September, so we are therefore actually changing our approach and therefore suspending the closure of the program.”
Walker says Surrey is growing exponentially so the YMCA wants to provide additional programming.
