A homeless man and his young son are getting access to some support services after their story hit the news last night.
Staff at the Carnegie Centre in the Downtown Eastside are working with the man to make sure he and his three-year-old son don’t end up on the street.
Right now they are being put up in a hotel for a few days, buying them time for more support services to be out in place.
Shelter staff tell CKNW shelter spaces for single parents is always a challenge but especially so when the parent is the dad.
The Ministry of Social Development is not happy about the situation, saying NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert played politics with the issue.
The ministry says it does not turn away people in need, and the man turned down their offer for assistance.
Michele Stilwell’s office says they asked Chandra-Herbert to help as it was in his riding and quote “he chose a different course.”
