Police and security officials say the explosion took place close to the children’s rides in a crowded park.
Naveed Waraich of the Pakistani Cultural Association of BC.
“A lot of people are very concerned and they’ve been making calls.”
The attack targeted Pakistanis of the Christian faith, to which Waraich says the Pakistani-Canadian community is rallying around this group.
“There’s a large number of (people) in the Christian community living in British Columbia… And especially on Easter, that is not a good news thing.”
In recent years, Pakistan has suffered numerous terrorist attacks, including the 2014 Peshawar school massacre which killed 132 children.
The Pakistan government has announced three days of mourning.
A breakaway faction of the Taliban has since claimed responsibility for the explosion, and a spokesperson for the militant group even warned more attacks would be coming.
