It’s a show of a woman’s fight against racism online.
Former Vancouver Park Board commissioner Niki Sharma is in the race for one of three spots on the Vancity Board of Directors.
On her campaign page on Facebook, one woman addressed her by posting a derogatory remark about members in the South Asian community.
Rather than simply delete the comment, Sharma told CKNW Weekend’s Charmaine De Silva she addressed it.
“Most people tell you ‘just delete it’, but at some point I think if we don’t talk about it and don’t try to get a handle on what’s causing those things and how to build a more compassionate society, than this stuff just kind of twists and it gets out of control.”
In her response, Sharma suggests her attacker is afraid of people like her, but adds she too is afraid of staying silent and not confronting racism.
