A warning to Cloverdale residents after word of a new door to door scam involving men impersonating firefighters.
Lee Chalk, who lives in the Surrey neighbourhood, says two men came to his home dressed in coveralls and driving a truck with the Surrey Fire logo on it.
He says the pair knocked on his door this afternoon, and told him they were there to check his electrical meter – then told him he had a $500 bill.
“The brazenness of these individuals that would actually stand and talk to me as if they were really with the Surrey Fire Department is very disturbing.”
Chalk says he got concerned the men weren’t who they said they were, after a call to BC Hydro to replace what he thought was a faulty meter.
“Hydro said, ‘we don’t send anybody, the fire department does not come out to your house,’ they would call first and no, your hydro bill has never been over $500.”
Chalk says the men asked for access to his garage, and may have been casing his home.
He adds the community mailbox in his neighbourhood was broken into some months ago, and his identity was compromised.
No word yet from Surrey RCMP on whether there have been other, similar reports.
