The Mayor of Vancouver says the issue of homeless youth is a huge concern.
Gregor Robertson says it’s troubling to hear there are only 27 youth-specific shelter beds in the entire region, when on any given night, around 700 youth are homeless.
“It is a huge discrepancy. There hasn’t been a focus by the BC government to make sure that young people are not ending up on our street. We have got young people who are homeless and aging out of foster care. We have had bigger problems in recent years on this, and I am hopeful that we are going to see some movement from the Province on it.”
Robertson says mental health issues are increasing among youth who lack needed health care supports.
He says many young people feel unsafe in regular shelters.
