Investigations are underway into the death of a young woman, who had previously had contact with B.C.’s Ministry of Children and Family Development.
The BC Coroners Service and police still haven’t completed their investigations, but the initial details are alarmingly familiar.
CKNW has learned a young Aboriginal woman who “had been involved with M.C.F.D.” is dead from a suspected drug overdose.
In a statement, BC’s Child and Youth Representative says the young woman “was trying to navigate the system of youth support.”
Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says the case once again reminds her “of the frailty of the lives of some young people in the province…especially Aboriginal youth as they make the transition from child welfare to adulthood.”
Turpel-Lafond’s office says it is gathering information on this case, but is waiting for the coroner and police to finish their investigations.
For now, they are offering support to the young woman’s family and friends.
