Here’s something you don’t hear about every day: Vancouver Police report one of their marked cruisers was stolen overnight on the Downtown East Side.
Police say at 1:30 Friday morning, officers in a marked police car saw a fight at the corner of Columbia and East Hastings Street.
When they turned on their lights and siren, the aggressor ran away.
They parked the car in the south lane of the 100-block of East Hastings and ran after the man, arresting him moments later.
But when they returned to the car, it was gone.
A woman had apparently bypassed the vehicle’s immobilizer and stolen it.
Using GPS, they tracked it to East Hastings and Willingdon in Burnaby, where the car had slammed into a building.
The driver was not hurt and was arrested a short time later.
Charges of theft over $5,000, and possession of stolen property are pending.
Nothing was taken from the police cruiser.
