UPDATE: One person has been killed after a tree fell on a home killing a person inside in the Mountain Meadows neighbourhood on lower Heritage mountain in Port Moody.
Right now, BC Hydro reports over 115,000 customers are without electricity in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and the Sunshine Coast because of the Thursday morning windstorm.
The storm hit quickly after 5 a.m., because just over 5000 customers were in the dark that hour.
Environment Canada took down the wind warning for Metro Vancouver at 5 a.m. but an hour later re-issued it.
It never came down for the Fraser Valley.
Strong southerly winds with gusts up to 90 km/h are occurred over much of the region.
Winds will start to ease mid-morning and diminish further by the noon hour.
Delta has flooding
The Corporation of Delta has activated its Emergency Operations Centre because of flooding due to the high winds.
Mayor Lois Jackson says there’s been some damage done, but officials are taking control of the situation.
“So we’ve got several places flooded here along Boundary Bay road and other places down the beach. A few residents are impacted. Of course, we’ve had our crews out…a lot of them have been monitoring the dikes and so on. It’s a big storm. And the high tide was about 6 o’clock this morning so it’s on the ebb, which is good in terms of the overtopping of dikes along that area. We had an unexpected overtopping of people’s seawalls in an area we had never experienced overtopping before and we have our crews down there right now with pumps doing whatever we can to assist folks down there. The road is all flooded and it just takes time to get the pumps clearing out all the water.”
