A Vancouver couple is blasting the city’s Park Board, saying it took media attention of Stanley Park’s garbage problem for the Board to react.
Jonathan Weissman who has been cleaning the park with his wife for the past two months says they’ve been trying to get the city to do something for over a year.
“The response would be either nothing, or ‘we’re looking into the matter’, or ‘I’ve forwarded your e-mail to so and so’ who probably never called us.”
After continued inaction, Weissman says they went public and began organizing their own mass cleanup – that’s when the city finally went in to pull some of the trash out.
“What the Vancouver Parks Board has done is reacted to the media attention. They realize that they are looking very bad right now and they have to go out and put on a show”
And Weissman says they did a very poor job
“My description of what’s been done so far is woefully inadequate.”
He says the Park Board needs to assign someone solely in charge of the parks’ cleanup or this will continue to be a problem for the city.
