A 16-year-old boy has been charged in connection to an assault on a young woman at a Vancouver nightclub on Sunday night.
Vancouver Police confirm the boy is charged with aggravated sexual assault and forcible confinement.
Constable Brian Montague says they are continuing to investigate.
“It’s not something we see a lot in Vancouver. We do have unfortunately a large number of sexual assaults. They don’t often get to this level of violence.”
Police say they are speaking with several witnesses and have a lot of video surveillance to look at.
The suspect was taken into custody Sunday night and is awaiting a court date.
Unsanctioned grad party
The event in question was reportedly a privately organized grad party for students from the North Shore.
But the North Vancouver School District says the event was in no-way school-sanctioned.
Spokesperson for the North Van school district, Deneka Michaud:
“We try and encourage especially graduation students, and notices do go home from the schools to parents of graduating students that we encourage students only attend events that are school-sanctioned, and this is not one of them.”
Michaud says says staff are now jumping into high gear to support students.
“Our critical incident response protocol was put into place in which case we determine how to communicate with staff so that staff understand how to communicate with students and also prepare counsellors.”
The victim was treated at hospital and released.
