The leader of the NDP is concerned marijuana legalization will have some serious implications, so John Horgan has sent a couple of MLAs on a fact finding mission.
Finance critic Carole James and Public Safety critic Mike Farnworth have been tasked with looking at other jurisdictions where marijuana is legal.
Farnworth says they don’t have to go very far.
“Carole and I are going to be heading down to Washington State to get a sense of how the changes have worked. What are some of the issues that the province needs to be aware of? What are things that have been challenges? How has it been received? Are there issues from a health perspective, from a law enforcement perspective, from a community and civil perspective that we need to be aware of.”
He adds they also want to know what the impacts of legalization are on road safety, law enforcement, and health services.
“We need to have an understanding of that those impacts are going to be. And area that need to be addressed by public policy. So it is about finding out information and getting a better understanding of what those impacts might be.”
He says while marijuana is federal jurisdiction, there will be obvious implications provincially when it happens – so it’s best B.C. be prepared.
