The union representing correctional officers says the Robert Pickton book yanked off of Amazon yesterday was not a surprise.
Union of Canadian Correctional Officers Pacific Regional President Gord Robertson says the union warned the Correctional Service of Canada about the book last March.
“And we made management and the security intelligence office aware of the book. And again in July and August they became more aware it was being shopped around at that point. Again they were aware we instructed the management this was going on. We don’t what was done with it after that so it was out of our hands.”
Robertson says a ‘read’ order, allowing guards to carefully screen Pickton’s mail, was never issued.
“Well we don’t how early this book actually got out of the institution. That is one thing that we aren’t sure how it got out at this point. There is many avenues where it could go out, through legal correspondence or something. The law doesn’t allow us to search everything going out, inmate correspondence. It could have gone out before we are just not sure when.”
Robertson says they do know Pickton passed the manuscript to another inmate who somehow smuggled it out.
He says the union hopes the laws are changed in B.C. so serial killers like Pickton can’t profit from their crimes.
