Are you ready to bow down to our robot overlords?
Some people fear that using AI (artificial intelligence) and letting robots make decisions is a recipe for a robot apocalypse akin to the Terminator. Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking have both emphasized the need for caution when dealing with AI.
But let’s be serious about this for a second, so far robots are used in factories and to vacuum carpets. The reality of robots isn’t so scary.
However, in an effort to make sure robots decision making abilities reflect human morals, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have created the Quixote technique. The way it works is that the robot is shown stories that reflect normal human behavior; like helping people, showing up on time, and just doing good human stuff. Then it gives the robots rewards for making a decision that is line with the positive morals demonstrated in the story.
It’s really interesting because this is something we’ve been doing forever with our children. Kids books are all about teaching a lesson, they are about good manners and being good friends.
So not only is reading books good for you and for your kids, but it could also prevent the robot apocalypse.
