The Vancouver Police Department says it would support more supervised injection sites in the city.
It comes as Vancouver Coastal Health says it may seek federal approval to provide the services in health centres that already help people with addictions.
Sgt. Randy Fincham says Insite on the Downtown Eastside saves lives.
“There have been a number of overdose deaths where people using fentanyl, knowingly or unknowingly, have had their lives saved because of having medical staff there. The VPD does not respond to all overdoses in the City of Vancouver. We want people to first phone 9-1-1 expecting medical help and not worrying about the police showing up.”
Fincham says overdose deaths are on the rise.
He says a growing portion of the fatalities are linked to fentanyl, a potent synthetic that is often cut with other drugs.
