Many were shocked earlier this week when a priest based at St. Catherine’s in North Vancouver was arrested amid allegations of sexual abuse in an Alberta youth centre during the 1980s.
The alleged abuse took part at the Youth Development Centre in Edmonton, where more allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by other staff against residents continues to emerge.

Former resident Elaine was one YDC resident who says she was abused by the social workers who were supposed to be caring for her back in the 1970s.
Elaine now lives in British Columbia, and says the culture in that centre enabled the abusers.
“It seemed like most of the staff knew about it, and many of them were involved in it. It just seemed to be acceptable, nobody talked about it out loud but everybody knew about it.”
“A lot of them hung out with each other and partied together and everybody seemed to be comfortable with it.”
The YDC closed in 1990.
