Sixty-six dogs seized last week from the property owned by Marie and Glen Lawlor are now in the care of the B.C. SPCA.
When found, many of the mostly Bernese Mountain Dogs and Labradoodles were living in crates, with matted fur, covered in feces and urine.
The Lawlors ran a website for Family Kennels, which listed Bernese Mountain dogs for sale.
That website has since been shut down.
It’s a story that sounds familiar to authorities in Washington State.
Two years ago, more than thirty dogs were found in similar conditions at Maple Falls Kennels in Whatcom County.
The owners James and Tarasa Shively were charged with animal cruelty and banned from owning animals for two years.
CKNW has learned Tarasa Shively is Marie Lawlor’s daughter, and has also used the names Tarasa Lawlor, Tracie Shively and Traci Lawlor when conducting dog breeding businesses.
The Shively’s are reported to have moved back to B.C. after their Washington operations were shut down, where they restarted their operation.
Businesses connected to the family include the now shuttered Six Angels Kennel in Lynden, Washington which specialized in Wheaton Terriers, and Emerald Waters Kennel in Everson, Washington.
Calls to both Marie Lawlor and Tarasa Shively have not been returned, however in posts from 2013 Marie Lawlor says she is not connected to Traci Lawlor’s business

“Backyard breeders who are bad for dogs and their future families”
The B.C. SPCA says they are aware of complaints against the Lawlor family before, and were aware of the connection to the Washington puppy mills.
Operations linked online to the Lawlors feature a variety of complaints.
“I purchased a Whoodle (Wheaton Terrier Poodle Cross) from James & Tarasa Shively on Saturday June 14 and by the morning of Tuesday, June 17th my puppy was on an IV at the vet…suffering from major issues due to insanitary living and breeding conditions. He has ear mites, coccidia parasites, and is infected with giardia. All pre-existing conditions to the adoption. He was also underweight by almost 40% as recommended by my vet. Vet bills so far total $800 and I paid a whopping $1,200 for a sick dog. James and Tarasa are clearly backyard breeders who are bad for dogs and their future families. They operate out of their mini-van when showing their dogs to prospective purchasers. They do not provide veterinariy certificates which indicates they could be giving the pet’s direct vaccinations, if at all. DO NOT BUY DOGS from JAMES SHIVELY or TARSA SHIVELY. They operate out of Chilliwack BC, Langley BC and Everson Washington.”
On the same website, a complaint against Six Angels Kennel names both Marie and Traci Lawlor, alleging Marie had acted as an agent for her daugther’s business.
But Marie Lawlor has written a response post saying the claims are untrue.
