A public inquest kicks off Tuesday into the death of a man fatally shot by police outside the Starlight Casino more than three years ago.
Mehrdad Bayrami was locked in a five-hour armed standoff with police in 2012 after getting into an altercation with his ex-girlfriend.
Jordan MacWilliams, an Emergency Response Team officer fired his gun at the 48-year old, after he said he had “reasonable fear” Bayrami would fire his weapon.
But Bayrami’s daughter Nousha, who launched a failed lawsuit against the officer and the Corporation of Delta, alleged her father was shot in the back.
MacWilliams was charged with second degree murder after B.C.’s civilian police watchdog said further investigation was warranted.
The charges were dropped last summer after prosecutors determined there wasn’t enough evidence to proceed.
The coroner and jury will hear from witnesses with an opportunity to make recommendations to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
