Two students have been suspended from their duties as editors of BCIT’s magazine after they leaked an email they thought was inappropriate.
Lindsay Howe and Jessica Fedigan were told by their publishing manager Dan Post and a Student Association staff member from human resources that they had been suspended after they received and leaked an e-mail from Post concerning the alleged voyeur case which rocked BCIT this week.
Post oversees the student magazine on behalf of the BCIT Student Association and in the e-mail suggested the peeping tom incident was a “non-news story” and asked editors to focus on other matters.
Howe took that e-mail to her colleagues and journalism instructors, who backed her decision to post the e-mail to the BCIT Broadcast News website.
“I just felt it was really inappropriate for him to tell me how to report at [the program’s TV show] BCIT Magazine and [the program’s radio station] Evolution 107.9 because it’s totally separate, you know? I don’t know why he would ever be telling me what to do.”
“It felt to me like he was trying to manipulate what I should write as part of my school curriculum and that just made me feel uncomfortable.”
Fedigan was shocked about the suspension and says this was about doing the right thing.
“This is about being sent e-mails telling us what to do in our program like my teachers and my instructors, and when I’m in school I’m doing what I’m taught to do.”
Howe says she felt Post was attempting to muzzle her, adding she doesn’t regret her actions and did what she knew was right.
CKNW has reached out to Post for a response.
