Some residents of another Vancouver-area neighbourhood where high-rises are going up, fear they’ll be priced-out.
At an open house in East Vancouver, Chanel Ly with the Joyce Area Residents Association protests city plans to further develop the area around the Joyce-Collingwood SkyTrain Station.
“We are here to stop rapid unjust development that we fear will displace important members of our community and transform our neighbourhood into something we no longer recognize.”
Owner of a local pizza shop, Sam Dousti , fears larger commercial retailers will replace him.
“Super guys with lots of money they come and they want to get everything.”
The group is demanding more affordable housing.
City planner Paula Huber says there is no requirement for there to be an affordability component in the condominium buildings.
The plan will go to council for approval in the spring
