A high school teacher on southern Vancouver Island has to take a course on multiculturalism after he called a Middle Eastern student “Taliban.”
Matthew Shaun Pell was teaching Grade 11 at a school in Sooke last spring.
According to the Teacher Regulation Branch, he repeatedly referred to a student as “Taliban,” saying, “Don’t make her angry otherwise she’ll bomb you” or “She’s going to blow everything up.”
It made the student, who is also Muslim, and her classmates uncomfortable.
Pell has been reprimanded and now has to take a class called “Building Cultural Intelligence in your Workplace” at the Justice Institute, or else be suspended.
