“At the time that council made that decision (to regulate), there was a different federal government that had signalled that they would not entertain the idea of the legalization of marijuana.”
Now that the Trudeau government wants to move forward with legalization, the NPA councillor says Vancouver should just wait and instead focus on having a seat at the table as the feds figure out how they will develop and roll out new laws.
But Mayor Gregor Robertson says the city is going to keep rolling with its new rules regulating business licences, fees, and where dispensaries can operate.
“You know, it is the same backward approach that the Harper Conservative government had and it failed. It is disappointing to see this rear its head again when we see the progressive stance being taken by the Trudeau government. We are looking forward to new federal standards and an approach to marijuana.”
Robertson says the marijuana dispensaries regulation will stand until the Trudeau government moves to legalize.
