The Vancouver School Board is hoping to convince the City of Vancouver to change the distance between schools and medical marijuana dispensaries.
Currently, dispensaries need to be 300 metres away from schools, but Fraser Ballantyne from the Vancouver School Board says that’s not enough.
“I’m just saying let’s make the bubble a little bit bigger for the kids and maybe take into consideration the places that kids go besides parks, which they have talked about and they have recognized.”
Ballantyne says they are hoping to increase the distance to 500 meters.
Although he says he’s a big supporter of legalization, he explains students shouldn’t have to have daily encounters after school.
“Do we want to be sticking these marijuana shops right in their face as they are walking right next door you know to where they are regularly attending after-school activities?”
The issue will be discussed tomorrow during the Board of Education’s meeting.
