Victoria’s iconic Fairmont Empress hotel may have decided to eliminate its storied ‘Bengal Lounge,’ but supporters aren’t about to let it go quietly.
The colonial-themed room, complete with leather chairs and a tiger skin pinned to the wall, draws its inspiration from Queen Victoria’s reign as Empress of India.
The hotel’s new operators announced last week that as a part of upcoming renovations in April, the well known tourist attraction will be remodeled.
“We stood by and watched as they ripped out the weeping sequoias, and removed the ivy. Now they have plans to renovate into a modern contemporary hotel…this includes getting rid of the iconic Bengal Lounge … Tourists come from all over so they can step back in time… If we let this slide..next to go will be the famous tea room!! “
As of Sunday night, just over 5,000 people had signed on to oppose the changes.
