Vacation time – it seems like none of us ever get enough of it.
But what if you could take as much time off as you wanted. Paid.
That’s the deal being offered by one Vancouver tech company, as it seeks to innovate its way to a happy workforce.
Jeff Booth is CEO of Build Direct – an online marketplace for home improvements.
They’re trying the experiment, and so far, he says even he can’t believe the response from staff.
“It’s been wild. It’s actually been surprising to me how positive this has been taken by the employees.”
Booth says it’s all a part of attracting the best people.
“What we find is when you actually think of others first, you attract the kind of people who care about you two.”
The key? Booth says it’s about thinking in terms of what staff are producing, not how much time they spend doing it.
“If you measure by their outcomes, what they do, rather than their hours – it’s amazing.”
He says he’s not worried about staff abusing the program, because he says his team takes their jobs seriously.
Instead, he says its about showing people who work hard what the company is willing to do for them.
And he says it’s about reinforcing the company’s value that the journey is more important than the destitnation – even if that journey involves a trip to Italy.
Oh, and the good news? They’re hiring.
