Two years after applying, the Dr. Peter AIDS Centre has been granted an exemption under federal law to continue providing a supervised injection service.
The centre has been providing that service for the last 14 years, and Executive Director Maxine Davis says community support for the centre’s work has been important.
She says the federal exemption acts as a kind of “safety valve” so nurses and clients would not be charged.
“We heeded that, took it very seriously and put steps in motion then to begin the process of submitting our application.”
The centre says the work prevents overdose deaths as well as the spread of Hepatitus C and other infections.
According to Health Canada, it is now the second safe injection site in Canada.
