The only ferry providing service between the Sunshine Coast and Powell River has broken down.
It is the second time in a week this has happened.
The region’s NDP MLA Nicholas Simons says this is not good news for people living in Powell River, people trying to get there, or for businesses.
“It does not inspire confidence in people who are living here. We need a public transportation system that will allow economies to flourish.”
Simons says the ferry breakdown is unacceptable.
“Vessels have mechanical breakdowns. I think everyone with common sense realizes it is going to happen but unfortunately it seems like management, or the province, didn’t seemed to foresee that and sold there only back up ship to Fiji for we don’t know for how much but apparently rumour has it for a song. Now we are left without a back up ship.”
Simons says the only other route to get to or leave Powell River right now is the ferry to Comox.
“Well the folks who have gone up the Sunshine Coast and are in Earls Cove are going to have to wait until at least six o’clock tonight. That is the latest from BC Ferries. A second generator in the North Island Princess has apparently malfunctioned. The good news I guess it that if they need to fly in a apart this time the fog won’t prevent the plane from landing.”
BC Ferries says the North Island Princess is suffering mechanical issues.
It says it will update the situation Saturday evening.
