Abbotsford police have announced an arrest in a sex case dating back almost 17 years.
In December 2013, police sent previously seized clothing out for DNA analysis. A few months later, a DNA profile was discovered and a suspect was identified.
Const. Ian MacDonald says the clothing had been kept in an evidence locker until the lead detective decided to have another look at the case.
“It was in our evidence locker and so it was a result of our lead detective taking another look at what appeared to be a cold case and ultimately submitting those clothing exhibits for DNA analysis. … So it’s interesting that at the time he could have never imagined this case would essentially follow him through his career.”
James Allen Redden, 48, of Vancouver Island is charged with sexual assault, unlawful confinement, and uttering threats.
On the evening of August 7th, 1999, a 37-year-old woman was sexually assaulted, choked, and threatened while walking to her car after leaving a large, outdoor party in the 37200 block of Ward Road.
Police say the victim has shown extraordinary bravery over the years, and it was her strength and the perseverance of investigators that led to the arrest.
