Even as the federal government moves to re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard base, an e-petition is calling for the feds to breathe new life into closed marine communications centres.
The petition has already gathered the 500 signature required it to be tabled in the House of Commons.
It was put forward by a member of the union representing those marine communications Coast Guard staff and sponsored by North Island Powell River NDP MP Rachel Blaney.
The petition says the centres were closed with no consultation or thought about the risks involved.
It wants the Trudeau government to review the closure of nine of them since 2012 and re-open them “where practical.”
The petition also calls for the centre in Comox to be kept open.
