A man dubbed online as the ‘Knight Street Hero’ says he’s surprised at the positive public reaction to his project.
Cliff Relph has spent 65 days picking up litter along Knight Street in Vancouver. He says he wanted to help his community, but never expected to find so much trash.
“I never thought I would find this much, but every day I try to bring in 2 bags. I’m up to about 120 bags of garbage. I thought this would be a simple project I could just go out and do once in a while. But it’s almost unending.”
Relph says he had trouble finding volunteer work that would accommodate his work schedule, so he decided to take the initiative to clean up the neighbourhood instead.
Along the way, he’s been sharing photos of the garbage he collects on Reddit.
He says since he started the project, he’s been approached both on the street and online by people thanking him for his efforts.
“I’m very humbled by it. Vancouver sometimes, we feel like tame individuals overall. And when I started seeing a lot of posts saying ‘thank you for doing this’ I was really, really surprised.”
He says he hopes to spend a total of 100 days cleaning the streets, an initiative he says has already taught him a lot about the city.
Here’s just a sample of what people online have had to say:
