The U-Haul truck stolen from a Saskatchewan family moving to Victoria has been located in Abbotsford.
The Suiker family had spent the night at a friend’s house in Surrey, and awoke to the vehicle missing.
Cst. Ian Macdonald with Abbotsford Police says an alert citizen spotted the vehicle abandoned.
They quickly alerted a nearby police officer that was at the scene of a car crash, saying they thought it might be the truck that had been stolen.
“Upon inspection by our officer it was confirmed that it was in fact the stolen U-Haul. There were no contents left in it, and our understanding is that it previously had been accompanied by a trailer, and that trailer is outstanding as well.”
Macdonald says they’re working with Surrey RCMP in the investigation.
Michael Suiker’s partner, Louise Wowchuk, says there were a few things left in the truck.
“There was three, just three boxes full of personal keepsakes and mementos. So that’s when they realized everything’s gone.”
And while they did get some mementos, she says the Suiker family lost others.
Mementos of Michael’s teenage daughter Megan.
“Like her trophies. She plays soccer, she’s an actively stellar student. Anything that means something to her, those sort of things. Pictures are irreplacable.”
Wowchuk says the family lost nearly $80,000 in belongings, and has started a crowdfunding campaign to try to help them rebuild.
