A 63-story residential tower in Dubai was engulfed in flames today, as thousands gathered in the city core to watch a planned New Years Eve firework display.
The blaze broke out at the Address Hotel, just blocks from the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building and the site of the year-end festivities.
In video from the scene, people can be seen fleeing in panic, while debris rains down on nearby buildings.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation, but Dubai Police say it appears to have started outside, on the 20th floor.
Investigators say the fire wasn’t spreading inside the building because of internal fire extinguishers.
Government officials report 14 minor injuries, 1 moderate and one heart attack due linked to the fire, all of whom have received medical attention.
Despite the fire, the huge fireworks spectacle hosted by the Burj Khalifa went on as planned.
