Transit riders who have monthly passes will have to switch to a Compass Card by Friday, Jan. 1.
TransLink spokesperson Jennifer Morland says single-use Compass tickets will still be available, but urges people to sign up soon.
“FareSavers are still available. We are encouraging our customers though to take advantage of getting a Compass Card now with stored value, which is the same great rate as what you were getting with FareSavers.”
But she says there is no hard deadline for when everyone need to have bought the new farecard.
“We want to make sure that we’re giving customers time and we’re monitoring it every day to make sure that we have more and more people getting out onto Compass Cards and using it on the system. It’s more important for us to keep an eye on that and to stay tuned to our customers and listen to their feedback as opposed to setting a hard date for it.”
Morland says they are waiting for more commuters to sign up for the card before they close all fare gates.
About 375,000 people have signed up for Compass.
