Metro Vancouver is preparing to hand over Burnaby Lake back to the City of Burnaby.
Metro Vancouver leased the park in 1978, but Burnaby has requested control once the lease is up in 2020.
It’s a transfer that makes sense to Councillor Sav Dhaliwal.
He says Metro Vancouver is not equipped to deal with managing a municipal park like Burnaby Lake.
“The difficulty comes in now in how Metro could source out that funding because they put a little bit of levy to each household to pay for the parks, but it’s becoming very expensive in many ways.”
Metro Vancouver’s park system, was originally designed to create a green belt through the area, is now focusing on maintaining ecologically sensitive areas.
