It was one of the most iconic photos of 2015: a Mountie in full red serge playing one-on-one hockey atop a frozen glacier in the Purcell Mountains.
Rick Wiltse, who lives in Kaslo, took the photograph of then-Kaslo RCMP Cpl. Shaun Begg and goalie Mike Guttensohn on a trip with friends.
“A gang of us in Kaslo here met up with some guys in Invermere and had a game of hockey.”
Wiltse is not a professional photographer, and says the image was a bit of a fluke.
“The beautiful scenery, Shaun in his red serge, and Mike up there in his goalie gear; it was the perfect opportunity for a photo.”
The photograph went viral in March after BC RCMP tweeted it from their account, with many dubbing it the “most Canadian picture of all time”.
The three men have been working for the past few months to find a way to use the goodwill generated by the photo.
Wiltse donated the photograph, with Kaslo RCMP announcing on Christmas Eve that proceeds would be going to Syrian refugees.
“We’re using part of the money to go towards our arena here in town, and with the refugees coming into Canada needing support, we thought it was a good opportunity to support that as well.”
