That’s the goal of Project Backpack, organized by several non-profit and community organizations in Metro Vancouver.
The project is to provide school supplies for children on the Downtown East Side, as well as new Syrian Refugees coming to Vancouver who are about to start school.
Khalil Jessa with one group, Child Aid International, says they’re looking to raise $72,000 quickly, to provide the new backpacks sooner rather than later.
“Our goal is to raise that money, obviously, as fast as we can. We hopefully want to raise it all in the next three months. We can start picking a distribution day once we’re able to get all those backpacks.”
Jessa says so far 100 backpacks have been collected, and the public can donate money, school supplies and filled backpacks to the project.
He says many other organizations are involved, including the Syrian Canadian Council, Saigon Vancouver Foundation, and Vancouver East MP Jenny Kwan.
Anyone wanting to get involved to donate to Project Backpack can do so at their website.
