The federal NDP’s Coast Guard critic says the devil is in the details when it comes to re-opening the Kitsilano Coast Guard base.
Fin Donnelly says the base must have round-the-clock staffing levels and the right equipment.
“Is this going to be a full complement? How much equipment is coming back to the station? How soon is this? When you talk to people like (former Kits Coast Guard base commander) Fred Moxey, those are the questions he is asking and I think those are good questions. I want to see that station open as quickly as possible.”
Donnelly says he is cautiously optimistic with Coast Guard Commissioner Jody Thomas in charge of re-opening the station.
Thomas was one of the chief architects of closing the base and a vocal defender of the move.
