Canada’s national defence minister is describing how emotional it was to greet the first wave of Syrian refugees who arrived in Canada on Thursday.
Harjit Sajjan says seeing the children arrive and greet family and other Canadians waiting to welcome them brought back memories.
“The feeling that I got yesterday was a very similar feeling when I arrived in Canada when I was five years old. I came as a permanent resident, but when I met the families and saw the children that were coming out, you just saw the enthusiasm in their eyes and how appreciative that they were for what Canada is doing for them.”
Sajjan says some of the security concerns that have been expressed about bringing in refugees are valid , but when you meet their families, you understand their desperate need.
Another planeload of refugees is expected to arrive in Montreal on Saturday.
