The BC government is being called on to implement mandatory licensing of all asbestos removal companies.
The BC Insulators Union says B.C. is one of only a few jurisdictions with no licensing when it comes to asbestos removal.
Spokesperson Lee Loftus says the province should licence contractors who work in asbestos abatement, especially those doing demolition or renovation of older buildings.
“We want to make sure those that are doing it are properly governed by the rules that are in place for worker safety but we also want to make sure the neighbourhoods are protected from the dust and hazards that are being released by the type of this activity.”
Asbestos causes 60% of workplace deaths.
