Are there still pay phones around? There are a few, and the CRTC is trying to preserve them.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is putting large telephone companies on notice: They’ll have to notify a community before removing the last pay phone in municipalities and First Nation communities.
The commission says the decision will “empower” Canadians to voice their concerns to their local authorities if such a pay phone is scheduled for removal.
The latest stats suggest 32 per cent of Canadians use a pay phone at least once a year.
That’s down from 50% back in 2004.
