Vancouver City Council has approved a five-year vision to create or improve dozens of bike lanes in downtown Vancouver and around the Broadway business district.
But a proposal for Commercial Drive remains the most contentious.
Nick Pogor with the Commercial Drive Business Society told council a separated bike lane could threaten the economic viability of businesses.
“These concerns are loss of parking on the drive which businesses and customers depend on, an increase in congestion and safety issues, the drive are already very congested with competing uses including buses, vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.”
A staff report says cycling trips have increased across the city by 16% year over year.
Council also approved a one year pilot project allowing skateboarders in barrier-protected bike lanes.
