UBC has named a new chair to its board of governors.
Stuart Belkin will take over after the school was found to have failed to protect a professor’s academic freedom earlier this year, and then-chair John Montalbano resigned.
Jennnifer Berdahl had written a critical blog post entitled, “Did President Arvind Gupta lose the masculinity contest?”
She then penned a follow-up post, accusing Montalbano of trying to muzzle her.
A report into the allegations found that while there was no intention to interfere with academic freedom, “sometimes, several relatively small mistakes can lead to a failure in the larger system.”
Despite no finding of direct fault, Chair Montalbano stepped down in October.
UBC has pledged to make several moves, including hiring a specialist to help make sure academic freedom is protected.
A UBC grad, Belkin is chair and CEO of Belkorp Industries and Rogers Sugar.
