Exhaustion and elation.
A wave of emotions for a young Syrian family who arrived on Canadian soil at YVR airport tonight.
Enas Alsaleh with the Syrian Canadian Council of B.C. was there to welcome them with open arms.
“The dad said something like, because his son is not walking yet, he said I hope the first step will be in Canada, and I hope this will happen soon. So he was very excited, he was showing lots of facial expressions of happiness.”
Alsaleh, a Syrian immigrant herself, says it was touching to see how the young couple and their 18-month-old boy reacted to the warm welcome from their sponsors.
“I remember myself when I came to Canada I was crying the whole time at that time, but this family was really happy, I know they were tired, but they were super super happy. And that makes us feel, ok, they are happy, they are fine, they are good.”

The refugees, who were living in a Lebanon camp, are privately sponsored by the Peace Mennonite Church in Richmond.
Church goers were also at the airport to welcome the family with balloons, toys, and winter clothes.
