Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation is out with some new data that suggests foreign ownership of condos in Metro Vancouver is up.
The numbers come from a previous CMHC survey of property management companies and stratas, conducted in September and October.
They indicate 5.4 per cent of condos in Vancouver are owned by foreigners, up from 3.4 per cent last year.
In Metro Vancouver overall, it’s at 3.5 per cent, up from 2.3 per cent.
But the survey says Vancouver’s stats should be used with caution, because of factors such as the response rate and the variability of foreign ownership between buildings.
Senior economist Felicia Mutheardy says the organization is trying to fill the gap on this divisive topic.
“We hope to put together more of the pieces of the overall housing market picture by putting in more work to gain more information on other aspects of the housing market.”
Compare that to the data from Toronto, which is described as “excellent” or “very good.”
