Surrey RCMP are reminding you to take special care over the holidays, after they arrested a man they call one of the city’s busiest mail thieves.
Thirty-year-old Tyler Barta is the second person to be charged with several offences linked to an alleged string of mail thefts.
Corporal Scotty Schumann says a few simple steps can prevent a lot of grief.
“Whether your using community mail boxes or just your personal mail box at your residence it’s important to check it daily and remove it so it’s not left out for thieves to steal.”
He adds it’s also a good idea to never send cash in the mail — that cheques and money orders are a much better alternative.
Break-ins and theft from postal boxes as has been a persistent problem in the Lower Mainland.
Earlier this year, Surrey RCMP went on a publicity blitz, warning the public to take precautions, and calling mail theft a crime of opportunity.
In 2014, Canada Post was forced to promise to upgrade security at community mailboxes, after a wave of break-ins in Surrey and Langley.
