It’s the beginning of the busiest month for shopping, and local retailers are doing everything they can to make it easier for people to shop local.A group of local BC businesses has banded together for the 4th annual B.C. Buy Local Week.
For B.C.Buy Local Week Buy Local Week, Loco work’s with businesses across the province to illuminate the market and show consumers what’s locally grown, locally made, locally sourced. On until December 6th, BC businesses are encouraged to promote their own products on Instagram.
Amy Robinson is founder and co-Executive Director of LoCo, a not-for-profit organization and education and advocacy group that promotes local businesses. She spoke with Jon McComb about the variety of local products available.
“In terms of local grown, there’s so much produce that’s grown across the province… they might be carrots and onions, or they might be manufactured products using local food, like ice creams, chutneys and sauces. Local made is anything from local crafts to local clothing and knitwear, shoes…”
Competing with internet retailers
In terms of how local can compete with the ease of shopping online, delivery and the other conveniences that bigger, non-local companies can offer, Robinson says they just completed a report The Impact of Online Shopping On Local Business. She says that local consumers do want to shop local, they just need help in finding the products.
In response to the report results, the website bcbuylocal.com is offering businesses a way to promote their businesses and local-owned products on Instagram.
