New research using Vancouver’s Insite as a case study is bolstering the case for not just one, but multiple safe injection sites in Ontario.
“It would make economic sense to open up to three facilities in Toronto and Ottawa.”
That’s coming from Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, part of an analysis that concluded injection sites would be cost effective, with potential savings to the health system in averted HIV and Hepatitis C infections.
“We looked to Insite also for some input into what it might cost, for example, to set up a facility, and what the health effects might be from establishing facilities.”
However, Bayoumi adds it would cost even less if supervised injection services were incorporated into existing health facilities.
Back in June, Justin Trudeau praised tentative plans by Montreal to open a facility similar to Insite.
