The most comprehensive study of rental housing ever done in B.C. shows the housing system is failing single mothers and creating a crisis for renters.
The B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association has released an update on its Rental Housing Index, showing a severe housing crisis for single moms, youth, and Aboriginal people.
Senior analyst Tony Roy says the need for social housing is at an emergency level.
“You have a massive amount of people who are spending what I described as a crisis level of overspending on rent.”
Roy says single mothers in Coquitlam have it the worst with a low stock of rental housing, forcing up prices. Seniors in Kelowna are facing the same situation.
In 2014, the BCNHP and Vancity Credit Union developed the Rental Housing Index for B.C. and it allows people to look up information on affordability and housing suitability across the country. All the information is based on latest Census results form Statistic s Canada,
