Thirty thousand dollars.
That’s how much St Mary’s Anglican Church in Kerrisdale is aiming to raise to support a Syrian refugee family.
Johanna Finlay is a part of the effort and says while it’s a lot of work, it will be worth it.
“They are in need, and when we have so much here, it’s silly not to open your heart.”
“Getting all of the things it takes to carry on with life here in Vancouver: looking for a place that they can stay; school, setting school up for the children, language issues, and furniture, all the things in the kitchen, bedding… it goes on, it’s just a big job.”
Finlay says the work is being driven by compassion.
“They have been forced to leave their homes and leave anything that means anything to them and they have been left without the safety of a city or a country and they are in need.”
The church has previously supported refugee families from Kosovo, Bosnia, and Vietnam.
